DDMS Science Olympiad Team
The NC Science Olympiad
sponsors "tournaments that are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events that are well-balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, and technology." In other words: Kids learn. Kids build. Kids compete. Kids make friends. Kids get school spirit. Kids have an unforgettable experience!
Sci Oly will only be open to 7th and 8th graders, and returning team members in good academic standing will have first "dibs" on team spots. The team will begin meeting in November after school ( activity bus information). The Raleigh area regional tournament is in early Spring.
Last year, the middle school events included the following themes:
* Forests and Deserts,
* Disease Detectives,
* Amphibians & Reptiles,
* Anatomy,
* Oceanography,
* Rocks & Minerals,
* Severe Storms,
* Constellations,
* Waves,
* Simple Machines
* Map Reading
Students could sign up to built contraptions including: Catapult, Robot, Glider, 'Scrambler' and Tower.
You don't have to be an expert in medieval warfare or an aerospace engineer to get involved! Anyone who likes to tinker with gadgets, and anyone with an interest in science would enjoy taking part. If you happen to be an ecologist, herpetologist, epidemiologist, oceanographer, geologist, meteorologist, astronomer, physicist, or engineer; then that's even better!
The teachers at school helped prepare students for these and for other events. Getting kids prepared for competition and helping them build things for competition is a real blast! If parents haven't heard about Science Olympiad, then they're missing an opportunity to have a great time with their kids!
